Bangkok Transport for Nightlife: Getting Around After Dark
Most visitors underestimate transport costs after midnight and end up paying triple for late-night rides. Here's some helpful tips of Bangkok nightlife transport and how to navigate it without breaking your budget.
TL;DR
Use BTS/MRT to get to nightlife areas (cheap, fast, reliable until midnight), but budget ฿300-500 for getting home since trains stop running before most venues close. Download Grab for price references even if you prefer taxis. Keep transport money separate from your entertainment budget.
Quick Info
- Key Routes: BTS to Nana/Soi Cowboy (Nana/Asoke), BTS/MRT to Patpong (Sala Daeng/Silom)
- Train Hours: BTS: 6am-12am, MRT: 6am-11pm
- Late Night Costs: Grab: ฿100-400, Taxi: ฿80-300, Motorbike: ฿50-150
- Essential Apps: Grab, Google Maps
From the Airport
Based on dozens of airport runs, your best option depends on group size and budget.
Grab or Taxi (Best for Groups)
When to choose: 2+ people traveling together Cost: ฿300-600 to nightlife areas Time: 45-90 minutes depending on traffic and destination
Split between two people, you're paying ฿150-300 each for door-to-door comfort. Solo travelers pay the full fare, which makes taking the train more attractive.
Airport Rail Link (Solo Budget Option)
Cost: ฿45 to city center + BTS/MRT connection Time: 30 minutes to city center, plus connection time Note: You'll still need to transfer and navigate with luggage
I've done this route many times solo - it works, but factor in the extra 20-30 minutes for connections and walking.
Getting To Nightlife Areas: Use the Trains
Bangkok's BTS and MRT systems are your best friends for reaching nightlife areas.
Why I Recommend the Trains
- Cheapest option (฿16-60 per trip)
- No traffic delays
- Reaches all major nightlife districts
- No haggling or potential scams
Key Nightlife Areas
- Soi Cowboy: Asoke BTS or Sukhumvit MRT (5-minute walk through Terminal 21)
- Nana Plaza: Nana BTS (5-minute walk, can't miss it)
- Patpong: Sala Daeng BTS (3-minute walk) or Silom MRT (10-minute walk)
- Thermae Cafe: Asoke or Nana BTS (8-minute walk from either)
The Catch
Service hours: BTS until 12am, MRT until 11pm
Nightlife hours: Most venues peak after trains stop running
Same as everywhere, it's more expensive to get home after midnight.
Late Night Options: When Trains Stop
After midnight, your options are limited. Here's my take on the best options.
Grab (Most Reliable)
Why I recommend it: Fixed pricing, GPS tracking, driver accountability through the app
Pros:
- Know the cost upfront
- Safe and trackable
- Driver ratings system
Cons:
- More expensive than metered taxis
- Longer wait times than street taxis
Typical costs: ฿100-400 depending on distance and surge pricing
Street Taxis
When they work well: Abundant in tourist areas, often cheaper than Grab when using meter
The meter conversation: Always ask "meter please" first. Most will agree in nightlife areas. If they quote a fixed price, compare it to Grab's estimate before deciding.
My experience: Some taxis will refuse to use the meter, in my experience 50% of the time. If quoted fixed price is around Grab's estimate, it's a good deal.
Motorbike Taxis
- Best for: Short distances between venues in the same area
- Cost: ฿50-150 for trips under 2km
- Safety note: Thailand has high traffic accident rates. Most don't provide helmets.
I never go for motorbike taxis, but that's just me.
Tuk-tuks
- When to use: For short distances between venues in the same area, it can be a fun experience
- Cost: More expensive than street taxis
Staying Near Nightlife Areas
Staying in these areas can save ฿200-400 per night on transport costs.
Sukhumvit area hotels: Walking distance to Soi Cowboy, one train stop to Nana Silom area hotels: Walking distance to Patpong, longer journey to other districts
Emergency Money
Keep ฿500 cash: Minimum for emergency taxi home, don't spend transport budget on drinks
The bottom line: Bangkok's transport system works great for getting to nightlife areas, it costs more to get home after midnight but still very accessible. Bangkok is a city that never sleeps, it's almost hard to get stranded unless you have no money. Plan wisely and you'll have a great time.
